A noise from behind you like a wave moving along the ocean's surface forces you to tear your eyes from Jean, who's still struggling against the slugs that are quickly ascending her body. When you turn, you see the slugs retreating through the swamp, retracting their wriggling black forms from the forest floor until they eventually make their way out of sight. Silence envelops you, the only sound being that of the tree branches rustling above you, until it's broken by the yelp you let out when something hits your shoulder from behind you. When you spin back, you see Jean looking at you quizzically, her body completely slug-free.
"What's up with you?"
"Those slugs were..." You shake your head.
"Yeah, they almost got us, but I guess we showed them, huh?"
You're starting to get confused. "But they were all over you, and-"
"No they weren't." Jean gives you a concerned look. "You sure you're okay?"
"Yeah, but I remember them all crawling up you legs and all over your-"
"Really, I don't know what you're talking about. We were surrounded by those black slug leech things and they almost got to us, but they never really got that close. You sure you aren't imagining things?"
You grimace as you try to make sense of what she's telling you, but decide to drop the subject. It's not worth wasting time talking about here when all sorts of nasty things could be coming after you, and you'd really rather just get going.
