I realized I had two sets of memories for history. One that I'd grown up with, and another that seemed like something out of a porno movie; for misdemeanor charges Judges could sentence men and women to remain nude, partially clad, or dressed in clothes of the judge's choosing for a number of hours, days, or even months!
There were provisions for inclement weather, dangerous professions, health conditions, and a limitation that time spent in private didn't count toward serving the sentence. There was a bunch of other stuff, a whole body of rulings, clarifications and the like--but the wish only gave me an understanding of the new laws about equal to what I'd had before.
In the new history the pilgrims used public nudity as a deterrent sentence for minor offenses. It became common practice in all the colonies, and was embedded in federal law after the revolution. Modesty was alive and well, in some ways people were more prudish about showing their skin than ever, since it was taken to mean you'd broken the law!
There were still nudists, some as a political statement, others as a lifestyle choice. The difference was that they could walk down the street and go to work in the buff without any legal repercussions, just social stigma.
The biggest difference was that in the new laws people are considered adults at 14, though many of their rights were 'held in conserver-ship' by a guardian or the state itself until they were 18. Nothing in my wish memories explained why that should happen, and I might have wished to know more if Erin hadn't crossed the street and come over to me.
