Nikki wondered what was going on. Whatever this sugary smell was, it was making it difficult to think, but...it felt so good. It tickled at her brain and made her feel warm and happy, but only a bit. Maybe if she got some more of it...no! No, she had to find a way to change back to human form (and more importantly, male form.) She didn't have time for this stuff!
She looked for Laila and Mai, to ask them how she could get her old body back, but they had left her side. She looked around for them, but it took her a moment, in her clouded state, to notice that they were down by the flower bulb, the one they called a "sugarbloom." They were stabbing at the bottom with twigs; what were they trying to...
Suddenly the bulb, dry and brittle as it was, gave in to their efforts. The bottom of the bulb crumpled inward with a thrust of Mai's twig, and a great burst of pollen came out of it. The two other fairies flitted up into the resulting cloud, but it was Nikki who was caught full-force with the blast. Her startled gasp didn't help matters one bit, and in mere moments her throat and nose were filled with enormous quantities of the sweet, sugary pollen.
All rationality deserted her. She was only half-conscious, her brain wrapped in the terrific happiness given by the pollen. She giggled madly as new sensations moseyed through her mind, her entire body feeling warm and tingly. Her thoughts of changing back were lost in the pollen high, and were unlikely to return until its effects had worn off. Laila and Mai hovered nearby, nearly as lost in the effects as she was. All three of them careened around the clearing, grinning like idiots.
The next thing Nikki knew, she was face-to-face with a young man about her age. He, too, was a fairy, with dark green hair and wings. He, too, was spaced out on sugarblossom pollen, a smile on his face. Nikki felt strange, even stranger than the pollen made her feel. Something in the back of her mind was setting off alarm bells, but she was too foggy to pay them any heed...
