The smell and heat in Jack's filthy living room is just too much for you. You say you need to get some fresh air, and walk off to his garden.
Outside, Jack's garden reflects the condition inside. The soil is choked with weeds and scraggly grass, and the wooden fence is chipped and rotting. A lot of garbage is scattered around the small garden; a mattress, an old refrigerator, and a large number of car components.
The fence, though old, is quite high, so no-one can see into the garden, and there is no window into the living room. You wonder if there's anything to do out here.
