"Well," Alex started, "I think you're really cute."
Chris wasn't sure what to make of that, and Alex didn't immediately elaborate, instead she went to talk to the store owner.
At first the store owner didn't want to talk, but Alex was persuasive. The conversation they had was long, boring, and at times heated. Alex argued that while the magic was certainly impressive it left many practical concerns unaddressed. Such concerns ranged from how Chris' parents would react, to the fact that the modern world required lots of paperwork (school records, driver's license, birth certificate, so forth) that all indicated the female standing in the store could not be Chris and many things in between. By the end of the conversation Alex had learned, and Chris overheard, more about how the necklace worked and its history.
In short, the necklace was worn out from changing Chris from male to female but it would be recharged by the end of the day. Once that happened it would convince reality that what happened to Chris really wasn't that odd. No one would think it strange that Chris' identification indicated she was male, and those who knew that Chris was male before, her parents included, wouldn't find the transformation particularly odd. Instead everyone who knew Chris would simply accept that Chris had been male, was now female, and that was no big deal.
This did make Chris feel slightly more at ease, but she still didn't know what to do, didn't think she could be a girl, and certainly didn't think she could enjoy being a girl. It was a relief to know he wouldn't have to explain things to his parents or friends, but she still thought the situation was horrible, there had to be a way to- and suddenly those thoughts were driven out of her head as Alex kissed her on the lips.
When Alex pulled back, Chris stood stunned and motionless. Alex explained, "You know how whenever there was a, uh, romantic spark between us I ... put it out? It's not that I didn't like you. I do like you, I'm just not into guys." She gave Chris a moment to take this in.
Chris remained stunned. When she was a he, he had hoped for this kind of a relationship with Alex. She gave up on any chance of it this very morning. Now Alex was telling her that what made her give up, being female, was actually what meant they would get together. It was too much to process. Alex didn't like guys? Wasn't Alex the one who said she should enjoy boys looking at her? "But you said that when boys-"
"I said I think its funny how much attention they give me, because it's true. Its funny because ... how is it not funny?" She paused. "And I said you should enjoy it because I wanted to see your reaction." Chris didn't seem amused at that. "Sorry. Look, you said you didn't want to date guys, well I don't either. Let's date each other."
Chris was still having trouble processing the revelation that Alex was a lesbian, this was too much to take in all at once but she made a mighty effort. Chris was no longer thinking about changing herself back, she was no longer thinking about how she couldn't be a girl, or how much being a girl was going to suck. Part of her brain had been stunned since Alex kissed her, part was trying to figure out how she had failed to notice her life long friend was a lesbian, part was convinced none of this was happening, and the remainder simply couldn't believe its luck. The last part won out, and Chris said, "Let's."
Alex smiled, and then said, "Ok, so it's our first date. Where should we go?"
