"There's got to be something else here," Lee says confidently. "Let's search the banks. Keep an eye out for anything. What we're looking for might be purposely hidden."
Clay starts walking up the left bank of the lake, while Lee begins combing the right bank. You simply walk straight up to the water's edge, looking down at your reflection.
All you see is you, or rather, the girl you saw the first time you were here. The difference this time is that it's a true reflection and not a mirage. What's worse, it isn't vanishing and being replaced by an image of you as a guy. Depression sits in as you worry the transformative power of the lake is a one-way process. Would any more exposure to it simply change you all the way into a woman, or would it end up reversing once you had changed and start going the other way?
Clay calls your name. He's about forty yards away already. "You're not thinking of jumping in, are you? Stick with one of us!"
You look over at Lee, who's heard Clay's shouting and is looking at you expectantly. She's almost as far away as Clay. If you decide to jump into the water now, they'd never be able to stop you.
You look back into the water. Its clarity is broken only by faint ripples caused by the warm breeze. Your reflection stares up at you. It seems to have the same waiting expression as the one on Lee's face.
You close your eyes and make your decision.
