Nothing changes after that announcement; people continue walk by without paying any attention to you. You exhale the breath you were holding.
You don't get much more time to think, because your friends Steve and Jess are approaching from one direction, and Angela, the girl you saw in the photo who's apparently your girlfriend, is approaching from the other. Angela surprises you with a kiss on the lips, although perhaps it shouldn't have been much of a surprise.
You all say hello to each other, and then Steve says, "I guess we should get in line for tickets."
You look at the long line of people and say, "Oh, I already got them."
"You did?" asks Steve.
"I didn't even think we'd agreed on a movie," says Angela, looking at you with a puzzled expression.
You take a quick glance at the marquee in front of the theater. Nothing jumps out at you. You then get an idea: "We did agree," you say. "We're seeing that movie about the guy who gets magic powers."
"Oh, yeah," says Steve. "Well, let's go in, then." He takes Jess's hand, and you do the same to Angela.
Your offhand remark has turned into a big-budget Hollywood teen sex comedy called "I Wish," in which a nerdy teenager wakes up from a dream with magic powers (but unlike you, he has to say "I wish"), plenty of wacky hijinks ensue, and he ends up learning a valuable lesson when he loses his powers at an inopportune moment, but there's a happy ending involving his best friend, a geeky girl.
The four of you go out for ice cream afterward.
