Ashley screamed, and ran off down the street.
"Well," I thought to myself, "that worked out nicely." Always fun to see a snob get her comeuppance. I was happy to be the one to give it to her. Just then I looked back at the bus stop, and noticed the girl still amazed with what had happened. I had seen her in school a few times but could never remember her name. Looking up and down her body, I decided now was as good a time as any.
I crossed the street to the bus stop, trying to think of a way to talk to her that wouldn't arouse any suspicion. She glanced at me as I approached, still not sure what to make of what had just happened.
"Was that Ashley Farthington, that real snobby girl?" I asked. "Yes it was," she replied, then asked, "Who are you?" "Oh, I-I'm uh-uh," I stammered. This was off to a bad start. "You're 'Uh'," she asked with a sense of dry wit. I always liked that kind of humor.
I regained my composure. "No, of course not. Uh is my middle name." She giggled at that comment. "I'm Jim Stanley," I finally replied. "I go to Lincoln High, too." "Oh, I'm Judith Wilpon. I don't think I know you," she answered. I quickly tried to change the subject back to Ashley's misfortune and her gain. "No, you don't. What exactly just happened here?" I asked while committing her name to memory. Judith. That has a nice sound to it.
She blushed considerably, embarassed by her new looks. I thought she shouldn't be embarassed and quickly wished that she thought nothing had changed in her. "I have no idea. The bitch just started laughing at me for some reason...," as she continued I thought that wish worked great. "As if I'm not good enough for her little circle or something. Who would want to be? She got what she deserved." I added my two cents. "Yea, you're right. She treats everyone like they're dirt. I was just wondering what happened because I saw something weird as I was walking past." It took me two seconds to realize that line would make us part ways.
"Yea, heck if I know," she said. "Well it was nice meeting you. Hope to see you in school some time." "Wait," I delayed, trying to think of a good excuse. Then I realized how dumb this was. I had a magic ring after all. But something made me still want to get this girl on my own. So I wished simply that I would be able to say the right things to her that would make her want me. "I heard that you did some tutoring for math." This at least kept her from walking away.
She seemed somewhat taken aback, but replied, "Yes, I do. I was just heading home from a session now. Why, do you need some help?" In more ways than one, I thought. "Yea, actually. I have a test in two days and I can't get any extra help tomorrow." "Well," she said, "I don't have anything to do for awhile. I could help you now." Bingo.
I said, "Well all of my stuff is at my house. You don't mind coming over, do you?" "Lead the way," she replied. This was great, I thought. I've got a magic ring and I'm leading a beautiful girl with a personality I like to my house. Something still bothered me though. It was her hair. I never liked black. So I made another silent wish. I wished that her hair would turn a dark red and that she would think it was her natural hair color. Just then the blackness of her tresses melted away, leaving just the kind of red that I love.
What to do when we get home, I wondered.
