This is a variant of the "Food Chain 2010" story but with more details added. I liked the
overall premise, but I felt that the story could be much better with a few more details about
the actual act itself. The first version went in a lot of different directions, and with a set of
guidelines I feel it could be much more coherent.
Note the most major changes: not limited by age, no meat produce. If you want to write
anything with those elements please put them in the original. Thanks!
So without further ado, here it is!
-----------------------
It would always come in a red envelope. Each member of the family (the process of selection
meant family members would be chosen at the same time) recieved an individual letter, and
although details would be changed, the outline was always the same.
"Dear Sir/Madame,
This letter has been sent in order to inform you that you have been selected as part of the
Farmland Regeneration Act of 2009.
Extensive details are included in the enclosed booklet, including a species guide and other
such details which must be understood by you.
A medical will take place in your local Regeneration Office (______________________) at ____ on
_____ to decide your new species. Attendance is compulsory. If you cannot make this
meeting, please inform your local centre.
Please check the below personal details, and that they are correct. It is important that you are
over the age of 16 in order to take part in the scheme. If there is an error, please contact this
number: ______________.
..."
The aformentioned Farmland Regeneration Act of 2009 came following an outbreak of
disease among farm animals nationwide. The foodchain was destroyed. The government,
having funded development into the genetic alteration of humans, decided to launch plans to
select various people and transform them (via injection) into anthropomorphic farm animals,
primarily for breeding and labour. Cows, pigs, chicken, horses... all covered. Subjects would
have a medical, be assigned a species, and would spend the next two weeks worried as hell.
They would then be transformed and sent off to specially built farms to live their new lives.
The sequence of events after that could vary. The basic requirement was either breeding and
producing a given number of offspring for further breeding, working and providing labor for
various farm tasks for a given amount of time, or both. For the purpose of breeding, some
subjects could be assigned a different gender, but that was avoided as much as possible
except in the case that the participant requested it. After the subject completed their
requirements, they would be transformed back into their original selves and allowed to
continue with their lives, although for some recovery was difficult. Subjects were chosen in a
manner similar to the draft, concentrated around that age group. However, there was also a
program where participants could voluntarily sign up; by voluntarily signing up, you could
choose your own species if there was currently a demand for that species. In addition, after
completing the required service, participants were given the option to continue as an animal,
with the option from that point forward to be transformed back at any time provided they
were not pregnant at the time.
On this fateful 2010 morning, who recieves a red letter?
