"Look, I know it's none of my business or anything, but did something die in your car?" the jogger asked.
John, expecting a different response, had to think on his feet. "Uh, no, it's just, I think I left my window open or something. I guess a stray cat got inside and marked it."
"Oh, well, that sucks sorry to hear it. Anyway, have a nice day," the jogger said with a beautiful smile.
"You too," John said. He followed the man with his eyes before starting up his car, a shame he hadn't been beta material. To his surprise, he turned off the street up to one of the houses farther down the street. A house with a minivan and kids' toys conspicuously covering the lawn.
Finally starting his car and pulling out onto the street, John heaved a sigh of relief. Had things gone a little differently, he might well have taken a father from his children. He wondered if the jogger's reaction to the smell was tied in to the fact that he had kids, or just coincidence. No one at the gym had reacted that strongly, at least as far as he knew.
Putting his speculation out of his mind for the moment, he started wondering where he could go to get food for his growing clan at half past four in the morning.
