Realizing the only real option he had at the moment was some convenience store, he headed to the nearest one at the corner. He'd have to make a more meaningful trip later, once the grocery stores or, preferably, wholesale warehouses opened.
When he walked in the store, the bell rang but he didn't see the cashier at first. He heard a voice from behind the counter say "hey, be right with you, just taking care of something."
"I'll be a bit, no rush," John replied, as he headed to the discouragingly small refrigerated area. It took him three trips, but he cleaned out the cooler of lunch meat, cheese, and frozen pizzas, he grabbed a couple loaves of bread, a couple liters of water and soda, and as much jerky as he could grab. He hoped he wasn't overestimating how carnivorous his betas were.
When the clerk finally popped his head up from behind the counter, his eyes widened. "Jeez, worst case of munchies I've ever seen." He was about 5'8" and very thin with. His face was angular with high cheek bones and an aquiline nose that drew the eye to his strikingly green eyes. As he turned toward the register and started to ring things up, John noticed a ponytail of straight brown hair that went down to the small of his back
John smiled a bit nervously, "heh, yeah, sorry, got a bunch of friends over..."
The clerk chuckled, "no worries, man, I've seen a lot stranger. Name's Chris, by the way."
"John, nice to meet you."
"Same here," Chris paused, trying to get an obstinate package of bologna to scan. As he punched in the numbers for the item, he smiled, "hey, this is a strange question, but where'd you get that cologne you're wearing, it smells amazing."
"Oh, uh, it's a special blend my aunt's company makes, hard to find," John lied.
"It have a name?"
"Yeah, it's called, uh, Beastly," John almost blushed at how dumb that sounded.
Chris snickered a bit, "weird name, but sure smells good. Okay, I've got your total." John payed him, and as Chris was getting his change, he asked, "you in a hurry, I could use a smoke break, and it's dead this time of the morning."
"Sure," John said. Chris grabbed some of John's bags and they headed to the door.
