After they had packed all the food into John's car, he and Chris sat on the edge of the pavement as Chris lit a cigarette.
"So, you from around here?" John asked.
"Nah, not really from anywhere, military brat so we moved a lot. Mom ran out and Dad was an asshole, so I left home when I was sixteen and this is where I landed. I've been here five years, but it's not really home. You?"
"Same story, different details," John responded. He was a little worried after this morning's encounter with the jogger, but Chris was sounding like a better and better candidate the more they chatted.
Ten minutes later, Chris had finished his cigarette, and John was certain he'd met his next beta. "When do you get off of work?" John asked.
"Six," Chris said, "why?"
"I've got some sample packs of that cologne at my place, if you want, you're welcome to them. It'll be free advertising."
"Great," Chris said, "I'll drop by as soon as I'm off." With that, John gave Chris direction, got in his car, and headed home, where Hugo and Alex would be waiting for him.
