Jennifer had remembered something very important about her phone call that morning. She looked right at Kylie and said, "Someone was on the phone with you!" Jamie and Liz gasped while Trish looked on in shock. Kylie asked, "What do you mean someone was on the phone with me?" Jennifer corrected herself, "Well not you, but Kyle! He was whispering with someone on the other line. I could hear him talking to a person before he cursed me!" The other three were now truly amazed.
Jennifer's look turned cold. She seemed to be staring a hole right through Kylie's face. "Who was it?" she demanded. Now it was Kylie's turn for a change in facial expression. Her face began to look very troubled and worried, as if a great secret that no one was to know had been revealed. She stammered, "I-I c-can't tell y-you. She'll--she'll do something horrible to me." In this moment of fear, Kylie had at the very least let slip the gender of the other person. "She'll do something to you?" Jennifer asked, "What do you think I'll do if you don't tell me?"
Jamie wouldn't stand for this. She might have altered Jennifer's perceptions to herself, but not to others. She barged her way into the questioning. She could also tell that Kylie was both scared and upset. "Jenn, calm down!" she yelled. Jennifer looked like a vein was about to pop out of her head, but she couldn't get mad at Jamie thanks to Jamie's earlier curse.
Jamie turned to Kylie and said, "Look just calm down, too. Don't be worried. It's been a long day for us, that's why she's so upset." She played on Kylie's sympathies in order to defend Jennifer. Even though she didn't like Jennifer's behavior on most occasions, she was always quick to defend her. Most of all, though, she didn't want to upset Kylie. She continued, "Kylie, look. No one can hurt you. You were Kyle then, remember? Well only the five of us remember Kyle. So how could this person hurt you?"
Kylie held back her tears. She wondered, "Well what if the curse made her think that she was with me, and not Kyle. She'll still try to do the same." Jennifer was about to yell again, but Jamie shot her a look basically telling her to shut up for a minute. "Look, Kylie, hon. We're not going to let anything happen to you. That's what we're all about, that's why we want you in our group." She made sure to say we in the effort of promoting group loyalty to their new member. "And even if she could, we probably know how to use this curse a lot better than she does. So, come on, why don't you just tell us? Then you'll be able to see how we do things together. Because I'm sure we'll have to get back at this girl with a vengeance. Right, Jenn?" she asked, giving Jennifer a cue to speak again.
Jennifer once again realized Jamie's skill as a pacificator and mediator. That's why she took such a liking to Jamie in the first place. Jamie had become her diplomat, so to speak. "Oh, yes, we will. And you'll help us to get that revenge, Kylie." Seeing that Kylie was still wiping moisture off her eyes, she apologized. "Kylie, I'm sorry. It's just been one hell of a day for me. And remembering that someone else was there didn't help things. But I'm OK. We just need to know who it was. OK?"
Her apology soothed Kylie's mind. She breathed in heavily, preparing to spill the beans. Then a thought crossed her mind, and she chose her words a little differently. "I just thought of something. You're going to be really upset when you hear who it was," she said.
"Why is that?" Jennifer asked.
Kylie responded, "Because it was Miranda Kirkson."
