"Hey that's my bike!!" shouted Kevin as his friends Jim and Ron wrestled it away from him. Though he was taller, he could not overcome the two working together.
The boys dragged the bike to the odd structure. It looked like the skeleton of a covered bridge, except it was made of steel beams and much larger. They'd never discovered it before because they'd always been afraid to go too near the electrical transformer plant at the end of the woods near the cliff. But this time Jim had felt adventurous, taking a trail that branched in that direction, and of course Kevin and Ron followed.
Jim and Ron rolled Kevin's bike into the huge structure. It clearly had large electrical cable running to it. They had searched all around it finding only two interesting things, a knob and a button. The button was labeled "Go", and the dial had only three words, "Normal" in the center, "Larger" to the right, and "Smaller" to the left. Upon discovering these controls, the boys instantly knew they had to test it, but all they had were their bikes.
After the bike arrived in the center of the structure, the boys ran off. They found the controls.
"Let's try 'Smaller'," said Jim as he started adjusting the controls.
"Not too small!" interrupted Kevin. They stopped the dial somewhere left of "Normal".
"Here we go!!" Jim hit the button.
All three boys ran back as the giant machine fired to life. First the charging electricity noise, then the crackling of electricity, followed by intense zaps as the entire structure fills with light. The boys cling to each other as they stare on in awe. The thirteen-year-olds have been friends since they were very young indeed. They had reached that age where they were still kids, but had lost their baby fat and found exciting new things about them all the time. But nothing was as exciting as this.
The machine suddenly shut off. Only the sound of some bugs disturbed the silence. Kevin, pushed his tall, slender form up and ran inside to see what had happened.
"Where's my bike?" he cried as he ran into the structure.
The other boys ran to catch up to him. As they rounded the corner to be able to look in, they saw their friend holding up a small toy in his hands.
"Look what you did to my bike, you jerks."
Jim and Ron gave each other a high five. "It works!" cried Ron.
Jim ran back to the controls, with Ron following close behind. "What should we try next?"
