Ian walked down the isolated road for a while, not seeing another soul around. He knew from the sign he'd passed that the gas station couldn't be all that far down the road, but when you were actually walking it it seemed forever.
He started seeing signs of civilization, or at least farmland, after about an hour of walking. He thought about going to one of the farms and asking for help but decided against it. It wasn't that he didn't think that the farmer would help, but he didn't want to risk imposing.
It was only then that he noticed that the sky had gotten considerably darker in a hurry. Storms can blow in quickly, and slowly he realized that there was a doozy on the way. He looked around for shelter and spotted a barn and farmhouse across a large, empty pasture.
Figuring he'd ask forgivness later, he climbed though the fence and started running for the farmhouse. He was almost there, just about to the barn, when the sky seemed to open up in a torrent of rain. Adjusting course, he raced into the barn just ahead of getting soaked to the bone. He skidded to a stop and yelled, "Hello!"
His voice echoed off the walls of the barn, but was only returned by a couple of animal sounds. He took a quick tour while he waited for the storm to abate, noting that the barn had stalls for about a dozen animals. A couple were occupied by horses, a few were clearly recently occupied, with the animals somewhere else on the farm.
He also spotted the animal harnesses and other items hanging all about, well kept up and waiting for use.
Ian sighed and looked out though the barn door again. The rain was coming down even harder now, but it had to come to a stop pretty soon. There wasn't anything else that could go wrong, was there?
