"Hello?" Karen asked, checking the caller ID, and noting it came up as
"Unknown".
The voice on the other end was modulated and scrambled; whoever it was
didn't want to be recognized. "We know what you are.." it said darkly.
Karen tried to disguise her uneasiness. "Wrong number." she said
robotically, hanging up the phone.
Immediately it rang again, and again, the number came up as unknown.
She picked the receiver up angrily. "Look buddy..you're not funny."
"We're not trying to be. We want you to know that we know what you
are," the voice said, the emotions unknowable in its disguised tone.
"Fuck you."
"Wrong answ-" the voice started to reply, before Karen cut it off
angrily.
"I suppose you're some frat boy, looking to freak out some poor lonely
girl, but it's not going to work!"
"I assure you that's not our goal. We have other things in mind for
you...Karen." The voice laughed softly.
"Fuck you. You don't know a thing about me," she replied.
"On the contrary, we know what made you. We also know what magic you
use to hold yourself in check. For every spell, there is a
counterspell, Ms. Grey. We also know the counterspell."
Karen's blood ran cold, and she could only blurt out another "Fuck
you..don't..don't call here again," before she hung up the phone. She
sat down heavily on her couch, her head in her hands. They had to be
bluffing. They HAD to, right?
