"I want you to stay," Lina said. "C'mon, let's get ready for bed and start fresh tomorrow."
"O-okay," Amy smiled. "Thank you for letting me spend the night."
"And thank you for still being my friend after I screamed at you." Lina got up off the couch and headed upstairs. Amy began to follow, but looked around the living room. She couldn't leave it in the state it was in. She organized the couch cushions and decorative pillows, put the DVD back in its case, and took the empty popcorn bowl and glass into the kitchen.
Upstairs, the two girls readied for bed. They got into their nighties and sat up in Lina's room talking for a short time. They traded stories from school and shared in laughter. When they both began to yawn incessantly, Amy excused herself to the guest bedroom and bid Lina goodnight.
After tucking herself into bed, Amy stared at the ceiling and wondered about the strange attitude she'd been having that day. She knew it was unlike her to be so gracious, even to her best friend. And where had her sudden need to clean come from? Her own room back at home was a disaster area. Oh dear, she would have to clean it all up once she got home. But where would she even start? For that matter, how would she go about organizing her things...?
And so Amy slowly drifted to sleep, dreaming tidy dreams.
Lina, meanwhile, stared at her ceiling wondering why she was so happy that Amy had been so helpful to her. She'd considered herself a very independent girl, so why was she now hoping that Amy would always be around to lend her a hand? Granted, things would get done faster, and better, with a girl like Amy around. Then Lina could have more time to do her homework, or watch tv. Maybe she and Amy could get the house into better shape, to impress her parents when they came home? What if she had Amy clean the garage? Wouldn't her dad be happy. Or perhaps Amy could organize the cupboards and closets, to help out mom...
And in this way, Lina eventually found her way into dreamland as well.
