Tim thought a second and replied, "I wish I had powers like you!"
Carrie smirked and then hit "pause" on the whole situation. The boy froze in front of her along with the rest of the world.
Looking down at the hamster she said, "Todd, I think I'm going to need your expertise on this one. Let's talk."
She set the remote and fired at Todd.
"Oh, did you just...?" said the hamster in Todd's voice. "Yes, I can talk. You're getting good with that thing."
"Thank you," she said. "Now, what do you think about Tim's wish?"
"I dunno," said the hamster. "Maybe I could say if you made me human again."
"Don't press your luck. Be happy I'm letting you speak for a minute."
The hamster sighed, which is a funny sound and hard to describe. "Fine then, but will you at least take it into consideration if I help you here?"
"Certainly," she said and smiled. "Did you understand his wish? What can we do? Sounds like it could be dangerous to grant it."
"Very dangerous," said the hamster. "I mean, you know, 'monsters from the Id' and all."
"'Monsters from' the what?" asked Carrie.
"Didn't you ever see Forbidden Planet?"
Carrie just stared at him blankly.
"Old Sci Fi film? Leslie Nielson? Come on, it's a classic."
"Sure," said Carrie.
"OK, its like an adaption of The Tempest. The astronauts land on a planet and find an old man living there with his daughter. There's a monster that starts attacking them. Eventually, they figure out that the old man is creating the monster because his subconscious is controlling a huge old alien machine."
"So...?"
"So, if you let that kid make any wish he desires, not only will he be able to create and do anything he wants, he will also be able to create and do anything his subconscious wants."
"So...?"
Todd sighed his silly hamster sigh again. "Think of the weirdest dream you ever had. Maybe you had sex with a family member or you turned into a man or something. That's your subconscious at work. Repressed memories. Denied desires. Forgotten traumas. They're all buried deep inside of your mind. If you give yourself the power to do anything, your subconscious may just start making these things come true without you realizing it."
"Interesting." she said and smiled.
"But," said Todd. "You would be in danger around him too. We all would. This is exactly why I made this remote. I could have put the control in my own mind, but I was afraid I would lose control to my subconscious. Of course, there was the danger of losing control the other way..." He looked down at his hamster paws. "...which I probably should have worried more about."
Carrie chuckled, "Yes, maybe you should have."
"Please," said Todd. "Just think about the consequences. Do you really want to turn the world over to the subconscious fantasies of an adolescent boy?"
Carrie thought about it a second. "OK, I've made a decision..."
