"In this department we hire for personal transportation," the be-suited man said. "Larger vehicles, like cars, are no longer economically viable post-oil. So, with the re-urbanization that is taking place, people require a simpler method of moving about. If you accept this position you will be turned into a new model of private transportation. Built to the client's specifications, you will be leased for an eight-month term before being returned to normal."
A hand was raised by a person in front. "Sir, how can we be transports? Wouldn't that just add to the fuel problems?"
"Ahh the full answer to that is very technical," the man said loosening his tie in the warm room. "But I am told that you would be solar powered and your mechanics would be semi-biological; not requiring lubricant."
Another hand, "Would we be unconscious?"
"No. We have found that using the human brain as a control device greatly eases user interaction," the suited man was in full pitch now. He opened his case and started passing out glossy pamphlets that showed various models and features of the devices. "You get the option to be able to sleep when not in use. But for the most part, you will be mute and immobile. I won't lie, this opportunity is not suggested for people who don't lead rich, internal lives." He laughed to lighten the impact but those present got the impression. They would be essentially alone with their own thoughts for eight-months.
There were a few more questions and the suited man spoke for many minutes to answer them all. As much as he praised the opportunity he also seemed unable to lessen the negatives. In the end only, about half the people choose to take the job. The others left the room to look for other jobs.
"Great!" the man said. He pulled out another folder and started passing the papers inside to those who remained. "These are the particular models that we already have orders for. Choose whichever one you like. Or pick one yourself and we will try to find a placement."
