Even though you really needed a nice comfortable inn, you know that some innkeepers react poorly to being broken in on, even if it's just to sleep in the stable, and to wake an innkeeper might cause him or her to raise their rates and in addition to being short on food, you're also short on coin. Pulling your weather beaten old cloak around you for protection from the cold and rain, you march out to the outskirts of town. You're no ranger, but you've managed to survive a bit in the not-so-great outdoors on many occasions and you know more or less what to look for in safe sleeping arrangements, you think. You head north on a lark and after some marching you see some rocky regions not to far off to the left and an area to the right where the forest grows thicker. The forest might provide you with some marginal protection from the rain, though probably not enough to light a fire. The rocky region, though might have a cave, which would offer complete protection and a chance to light a fire, but who knows what else might have chosen those caves to sleep in? Which direction to you go?
