You look at the piece of gold jewelry inside the clear plastic bag. It's hourglass-shaped, or perhaps more like a barbell. There are two symmetrical circles made of fancy geometric weaving, joined together by a straight line. From the two pins on the opposite side, you guess it's a broach of some kind. You're sure it's made of solid gold. Set within the interweaving lines are dozens of small white jewels, and in the middle of each circle is a gleaming ruby.
There is also a folded piece of rice paper inside. You look for an opening in the packet and find that it's sealed shut on all four sides. Seeing the potential value in this untarnished piece of jewelry, you decide not to open it, and head out of the park to find a jeweler's.
With visions of dollar bills dancing in your head, you make your way into the heart of town. You're sure you're close to a jewelry store now, but the long walk has made you tired, and very hungry.
You grab a bite to eat at your favorite deli and, sitting at one of the tables out on the sidewalk, you enjoy a quick bite.
As you eat, your mind can't get off the beautiful broach, and you pull it out of your pocket to admire it further. The way the sun dazzles off the pair of rubies and their surrounding gold luster is almost hypnotizing.
You finish eating and toss your trash in a bin nearby. You pick up the packet again, unable to wait until you get to a jeweler's. You tear it open and let the broach fall into your open palm. The instant it touches, you feel a sting in your hand, which travels quickly across the rest of your body. At first you think one of its pins has pinched you, but you turn it over and see they are properly secured and there's no blood on your hand.
You stand in confusion for only a second before...
