One day, Jeff's old life finally came back to the fore. Weeks had passed since he was born, and not once had he remembered being human, until a couple of familiar faces appeared at the door. It was his parents!
Suddenly, it all rushed back. He was human, he had turned into a puppy. He had to get back! Maybe the chronivac could still change him. He had to get back to it. He could hear them talking, and though it was a struggle to remember human speech, they seemed to be talking about adopting a pet. As his parents approached, he did what he did best; be cute. He rolled around, nibbled at them, jumped up, everything he could do to seem the cutest puppy he could be.
"Oh, this one is so sweet. I think we should take this one."
Jeff jumped up and licked his dad as he was picked up, his tail wagging.
"Maybe...we could call him Jeff?"
His parents seemed sad for a moment, and Jeff felt awful. He had been missing for three months, they must have had no idea what happened. He snuggled into both of them as they hugged him in turn, and wagged his tail the entire ride home.
When they arrived, he was overjoyed to see his old house. It had barely changed, really. He walked around clumsily, sniffing things to see if he could recognize them, before he remembered that he wasn't always a dog and shouldn't expect to recognize scents. Being a dog for so long, and growing up from scratch as one, had made it tough not to think like one too.
He complied obediently as he was shown his new bowl and bed, and when his parents clipped a little white collar around his neck. It even felt quite nice, to be owned and be a pet. He felt a temptation to leave the chronivac, to just accept it and be Jeff the puppy.
