Sarah could barely contain her excitement, and she was not alone. The entire crew was eager to begin exploring this alien world, which the ship's captain had named, "Incognita"; a reference to unknown areas on ancient earth maps. Captain Keller was a born leader, and inspired deep respect from his crew. He was quite fit for 45, and his salt and pepper hair made him look even more distinguished. He called the crew to the main lobby of the ship. All 249 members of the crew looked up at him as he ascended a balcony. When he reached the top, he produced a bottle of champagne, "Ladies and Gentlemen, we have arrived." A popping sound echoed off the walls of the inner hull and was met by cheers and clapping from the crowd.
Captain Keller slowly raised his hand, and the crew became silent once again. "You all deserve credit for getting us here safely. I know that all of the scientists are eager to get out into the field, and the engineers want to begin construction on the first of many new structures that will comprise phase one of the Colony Project. We must proceed carefully, however. In many ways, our situation is like that of the Pilgrims who first reached the New World. We must rely on each other, because outside help lies across an ocean of space. Gentlemen, please join me on the balcony."
Three men made their way from the crowd to the platform. Clothed in adaptive camouflage tactical gear, their shirts and pants seemed to ripple with subtle variations of color as they moved. They were marines, and had kept mainly to themselves during the voyage. Sarah felt somewhat distrustful of them, but told herself that they had Captain Keller's confidence, and that was enough. When they reached the top, they stood at attention with their eyes forward and their arms at their sides.
"At ease, gentlemen," said Keller, with a chuckle. "Sergent, if you please..."
The marine in the center walked forward stiffly and shook the Captain's hand. He was in his late 20's, but his stern face and intense gaze made him look much older. "For those of you who do not know me, I am Staff Sergent James Norris. The men behind me are Lance Corporal Lane, and PCF Knox." Each man gave a slight nod when his name was mentioned. "We are United States Marines, and we take orders directly from the Captain. We are here for your protection, and will be leading the first reconnaissance mission on the planet's surface. Captain Keller has asked that one scientist and one engineer accompany us on this first mission. At this time, I would like to ask for volunteers."
Several hands shot up instantly, and Sarah hesitated..she wanted to go out and explore, but she was somewhat intimidated by these marines. Within a few seconds she decided to...
