Jake a Kyle were about to head down stairs, when Jake heard the front door open, then close. The boys froze and Kyle turn to Jake, who's eyes went huge. He turned and whispered, "That must be Kevin. He's just getting back from his swim meet! What do we do?!"
"We hide!" Was Kyle's answer as the pair jerked this way and that trying to decide where to go.
"Jake?! Are you home?!" Kevin's voice was loud, as were his footsteps up the stairs. Jake flung open his door, pulled Kyle inside with him, and slammed it closed. "Jake? Hey are you in there? What's going on?"
"Oh great, now he knows where we are." Kyle sighed, but Jake ran them over to his bed and jumped into it. He threw the blanket around a bit, and made sure to cover Kyle, before laying down and making it look like he had been asleep.
The door opened and Kevin gave his little brother a strange look. Jake faked a yawn, "Hey, are you home already, I was just taking a nap."
"Really?"
Jake faked another yawn, "Yup."
"Then who slammed the door?"
"The wind must have blown it closed."
Kevin stared at his little brother for a moment, then walked over to the window. "Strange that the wind can blow when this isn't even open."
"Uh... the wind... it blew that closed too! It was a really big gust!"
Kevin wasn't buying any of it. He crossed his arms and stared at Jake's eyes, "Whats going on?" Jake was about to make something up, but before he could, Kyle, who was still hiding under the blanket sneezed. Jake went beat red and averted his eyes from Kevin who now rushed over to his bed. "Who's under there?!" He ripped the blanket away and saw Kyle laying, pressed up against Jake. "What the hell?! Why are you in his bed?! What is..." It took a moment for Kevin to realize they were one body, and then another moment for him to believe it. He stared down in horror and his voice was shaking, "Jake?"
"Hi..."
"What in the world.."
"I can explain" Kyle said softly, then took a deep breathe and told the story of how he and Jake had become fused.
"So, if I'm understanding this right. You're stuck like that until someone else puts one of those halves on?" Kevin was rubbing his forehead trying to make sense of things. Kyle and Jake nodded. "That's just great. How am are we suppose to get you apart? It sure doesn't sound like him and his brother are going to go back together any time soon." Kevin was mainly speaking to Jake the whole time, but Kyle had no choice but to sit there and listen. "I don't know what to do..."
"I know! What if you and me join?" Jake eye's lite up and a big smile spread across his face. "it would be so cool, and so much fun!" Jake had jumped up, pulling Kyle, and gave Kevin a hug. Kyle and Kevin were in each others faces and trying to keep their distance.
"No that won't work." Kevin said firmly. "We need to get you, to be just you. That's all I'm worried about right now." They stood in silence for awhile before Kevin took half of the chain from Jake. "I'll take your place." Jake and Kyle stared at each other then back to Kevin. "It's the only way this will work. Just tell mom and dad that I'm spending the night next door because me and him have a science project to work on."
"I have a name." Kyle said, not trying to hide his annoyance.
Kevin completely ignored him and continued, "They should be fine with it if it's for school."
"Ya but."
"No buts Jake. I'm doing this for you ok." Kevin leaned forward and rubbed Jake's head, "Who's my little buddy?" Jake couldn't help but smile and nodded. Kevin took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and place the chain around his neck. He felt himself slam into someone else, and when he opened his eyes, he could see Kyle and himself were a two headed conjoined body.
