All of the kids were real excited, and I found out why when we pulled into the big city zoo. We were gonna' see all the neat animals! Mrs. Mendez got off first and talked with a pretty lady from the Zoo, and then they had all us kids get off the bus and hold hands. I had to hold hands with one girl, which was yukky.
The zoo lady took us around to the gate, and then led us around to the cages. Teddy and Jimmy kept getting out of line, and Ms. Mendez had to yell at them. We went to the monkey cages first, and saw a big gorilla with silver hair, and some chimpanzees that were jumping around and throwing things.
Jimmy pushed me aside to look at the chimpanzees. "They don't have to follow any dumb rules! It would be neat to be born a chimpanzee! Then the mean old teacher wouldn't be able to yell at us!"
I didn't like him talking like that about Mrs. Mendez, and wished that Jimmy and Teddy really could be born chimapnzees. Just then, Jimmy vanished. One of the girls looked startled, and asked where Teddy had gone, but with all the kids all crammed up against the fence, nobody really noticed that he and Jimmy had vanished.
Then one of the other kids pointed at a chimpanzee over by the back. "Say! Lookit that one! She's real fat! oh, gross! What's she doing?"
The zoo lady came over and stared at the fat monkey. "Oh, my God! She's delivering! I didn't even know she was pregnant! I have to get the Vet!" She ran off and left us with Ms. Mendez. It was really neat to see the two little baby chimpanzees getting licked clean by thier mama. Jimmy and Teddy wouldn't be able to say mean things about Mrs. Mendez again.
