Sizing up the options

added 12 years ago S

You're stuck in the middle of the woods. No one knows you're here. Your cabin is just a couple minutes walk from here, up the hill and through the trees, but at your new size, who knows how long it would take you to get there?!

You're in a total panic. Your heart is pounding in your microscopic chest. You look up in terror as a dragonfly buzzes noisily overhead like a jumbo jet. A hundred thoughts bombard you all at once.

1/10th of an inch. You're just a little taller than two millimeters. Ants are bigger than you. You wonder momentarily how you can still be alive at this tiny size when suddenly a strong, cold wind--really just a gentle breeze at your former height--slams your naked body, nearly blowing you over. You grab onto the side of an enormous boulder for support, then recoil as you realize what you've just touched. A two-ton PEBBLE, immovable and almost twice as tall as you. Regaining your balance, you look up and see the enormous blades of grass rustle and creak in the passing wind.

Before, the forest floor was nothing to you, just grass you easily crunched underfoot. Now it is now an almost impenetrable jungle of thick, indestructible green blades as tall as any city buildings you've ever seen. It's so dense you can only see the next few blades in front of you. You're so miniscule the grass blades block your view of the actual trees of the forest.

"How am I going to get home like this?!" you mutter in a panicked voice. You're shocked. You try speaking again. "Hello. Hello. Hello?!" Even to you, your voice feels faint and weak, high pitched and not carrying very far.

You try not to think about it. You can't just stand here freaking out. You've got to do SOMETHING.

Your excellent sense of direction kicks in.

"Home is THAT way," you squeak, turning away from the vast sea of detestable shrinking water and looking into the jungle.

Home. Your cabin. Safety.

You're still pretty full from your late breakfast so hunger isn't a problem. Also, it's not even noon yet, so there's plenty of sunshine left in the day. Naked, shivering, and only two pathetic millimeters high, you know you won't stand a chance out here when the sun goes down. You think about the dragonfly and wonder what ELSE is out there. You don't know what's in the grass jungle, but getting home as soon as possible is your only chance for long-term survival. You don't like it, but you bravely take a deep breath and walk towards this new, otherworldly forest...

When...

You look to your right and see your shoes and clothes, piled up by the ocean-- "No--NOT an ocean, just a dinky STREAM," you say to yourself, disgustedly. Your mind is already reinterpreting what you're seeing, trying to make sense of the grotesque new world you find yourself in.

They were only a few feet away from them when you got in the stream, but now that you've shrunk so dramatically, they look like they're a mile or two from your current spot. Your shoes are the size of football stadiums. Your clothes, wadded up right next to them, are a mountain of blue denim and white fabric, filled with valleys and caverns, little indentations and places to hide. Hmm...

You pause. Maybe you should re-think your plan. Instead of dashing into a dangerous jungle filled with who knows what, maybe you should take shelter in your wadded up clothes? After all, you don't know if this shrinking is permanent. Your new state might only be temporary! Yeah, it could wear off in a little while. Why should you run head-first into danger and risk being eaten by a bug when you might grow back to your normal size in a little while? You might not be stuck at 1/10th of an inch FOREVER.

The thought suddenly hits you again, breaking through everything else. You're 1/10th of an inch high. The horrible truth feels like a punch to the stomach and you find yourself crying out uncontrollably in total panic.

What are you going to do?
