Safety of the Shoes

added 12 years ago S

You take a deep breath and try to think rationally. Running off into the towering jungle of grass at 1/10th of an inch high seems like a great way to get yourself killed.

Also, you may have a great sense of direction, but you're two millimeters high right now. At your normal height, your cabin is just a five minute walk from here. Who knows how many days of non-stop travel it would take you to get home now?

"It may wear off," you think to yourself, looking down at your tiny body. "I'd better just wait and see."

You head for your pile of clothes towering like a mountain in the distance.

You travel for a good ten minutes but your clothes still remain far in the distance. The cruel reality of how tiny you are really starts to sink in now. You pick up your pace, jogging lightly.

Finally, you reach the edge of one of your shoes. It fills your entire field of vision. It isn't even recognizable as a shoe to you, but a towering wall of brown. You fall to your knees, letting out a half-cry, half-scream. This is a nightmare. The treads of your shoe create a little cave and, bending over only slightly, you step inside to sit down and think.

So far, no change in size. Things aren't looking good for you. You don't mean to, but you let out faint, helpless cry. Your voice is so tiny that hearing it only distresses you further.

Okay. If the plan is to wait and see if you begin to grow back, you think to yourself, I need to mark how tall I am right now.

You grab a hunk of black dirt and crawl out from under the shoe. Standing up against the sole, you mark where the top of your head is with the black dirt. You step back and look at your handiwork.

"It may take some time," you whisper. You decide to crawl back into your hiding place, deeper this time.

Finding yourself with nothing to do but wait in the darkness, you slowly drift off the sleep.

When you wake...
