Jeff clicked nearest commercial location. He was thinking about the
office towers about a mile north of his neighborhood. He forgot that
as the crow flies there was a seedy commercial area a mile south of
his home on the other side of the river. Geographically, the business
closest to his house in the circle that Chronivac mapped was a
carwash.
His eyes widened in surprise as he saw his destination. He chuckled.
He had set the transformation for one day, and this might be
interesting. He sat back as his body turned dark blue. He felt a
zipper forming and the next thing he knew he was a jumpsuit lying
draped across his desk chair.
TRANSPORTATION IN PROGRESS chimed the Chronivac, and the surroundings
of Jeff's room faded. He felt a hook his mouth. He was hanging from
a hook in a locker at the carwash. He could hear water running.
"You're late, Carlos! Hurry up and get your uniform on and join the
line," shouted a man's voice.
The door to the locker clanked open.
"Mio suerte," said Carlos as he held the new uniform that had been
Jeff up to inspect, "Tengo nuevo."
He was dressed nicely in a white long sleeve dress shirt, and black
dress pants. He stripped down to his birthday suit and climbed into
Jeff.
"Going commando today, Carlos?" another man asked.
"Yeah, I gotta hot date tonight after work, an' I don wanna get my
clothes all sweaty."
"Well, remember two other guys wear that uniform on the other shifts,"
the man reminded him.
"I won't tell 'em if you don, Jefe!"
The other man shook his head and walked off, as Carlos took some ratty
sneakers from a paper bag and put them on. Then he ran out to the
line.
For a couple hours, Carlos operated the sprayer hosing down the really
dirty spots on the cars with soap as they entered the carwash via the
conveyor chain. Jefe came out and told Carlos to go to the drying
line and took over the soap hose.
Now Jeff's workout really began. Carlos was constantly moving as he
bent down to dry or scrub wheels, reached across the hood to make sure
the windshield shined. He squatted to polish the chrome grills, and
headlights. He squatted to shine the tail lights. He stood and stretch
to polish the moon rooves and skylights. It was hard work, and Jeff
was soon drenched with Carlos' sweat.
Eight hours later, Carlos hung Jeff back up in the locker. Thirty
seconds later, Emilio put Jeff on.
"Hey, Emilio, you wanna work a double shift today, Seb called in
sick?" Jefe asked.
"Sure, Jefe," Emilio answered.
The double shift ran 16 hours, but when the second shift ended, Emilio
didn't strip. Instead he lay down on the bench, and called someone on
his cell phone.
"I'm hot an' sweaty, an' wearing my jumpsuit, what say we do it? I can
be there in 20 minutes."
He listened for the response, and grinned and said, "Sweet."
Then he got up and ran out, unchained his bicycle and rode off still
wearing Jeff.
Back at Jeff's house, the computer chimed, "CHRONIVAC ERROR: Subject
Object In Use Unable to Change Back. Code 419."
