...pulled out a Math book.
"You left this at my house last Saturday," Rachel said, and handed it to Jenny. "You won't get much studying done this week without it, and who knows when we'll bump in to each other before this weekend."
Jenny looked at the Geometry book in her hands and back at Rachel. "Um, sorry."
Rachel opened the front door and said, "Don't be sorry, just make sure you study before this weekend. You're going to pass your midterm. I'll make sure of it, if it's the last thing I do."
"Thanks, Rachel. You're really, um, cool." Jenny winced at what she'd just said.
There was an awkward pause, and then Rachel slipped on her sunglasses and said, "Catch you later, Stretch."
"Later."
Rachel walked off, and Jenny watched her go until she was out of sight. Rachel didn't look back once.
Jenny sighed and closed the door.
"'You're really cool'? God I'm such a dweeb, a big amazon dweeb," she said. She tossed the Geometry book on the kitchen table and lay down on the couch, letting her feet dangle over one of the armrests. She thought over their conversation again. Rachel was nice to her. She liked her. That was clear, but that was all there was to it, liking. If only there was some way to get past liking...
"The Chronivac!" she said aloud.
"What?" said her sister from upstairs.
"Nothing, um, just watching TV," she said.
"Keep it down, space case."
The Chronivac could do whatever she wanted. But, what would she do with it? She could make Rachel a lesbian like her. She could just alter history so that they had always been a couple. Hell, she could even turn herself into Rachel's exact type of partner, whatever that was.
Still, there was so much that she didn't know about Rachel. Who is Rachel Sanders after all? Everyone thought they knew her, but she was still a mystery. If she wanted to get Rachel, then she would, first, have to get close enough to Rachel to figure out how to win her heart.
But how?
