Niki made good time on her way to the source of the magic, until suddenly, she stopped; she sensed the magic of another fairy nearby and flew toward it. The other fairy was looking at her as she approached and landed. She had violet hair with matching wings, and she wore a dress made of rose petals.
“You’re new around here… or are you?” She asked.
“In a way, yes.” Niki could only respond. “I was once a human named Nick Nimblepaws. I was caught in an enchanted fairy ring and transformed into this shape. If there’s any way you could help me return to my former state, I would be most appreciative.”
“My name is Lillian Stardust,” she responded, “and I must first ask you if, as a human, you had the gift of magic.”
“If I did, I knew nothing of it. It certainly would have been useful in my old life as a thief. I feel like I can now, though.”
“Hmm.” Lillian thought for a second. “Try to utilize it. See that leaf on that tree?” Lillian pointed to a close by branch with a single leaf hanging off it.
“Yes.”
“Channel your magic and try to strike it.”
“Okay.” Niki tapped into her magic, held out her hand and launched a small stream of light at the leaf, hitting it dead center shredding it to pieces. “So, what was that for?”
“I wanted to see the nature of your magic; and, as I feared, it’s fairy magic.”
“Of course it is, I’m a fairy, aren’t I?”
“It’s more complicated than that. Every race of magical being has its own unique brand of magic. Humans, specifically witches and wizards, have human magic. As you may know, not all humans are born with magic. Those who wish to become witches or wizards must either be born with human magic, or have human magic bestowed upon them.”
“However,” Lillian continued, “this applies to ANY being without inherit magic, human or otherwise. You were a non-magical human bestowed with fairy magic.” Lillian put her hand on Niki’s shoulder. “I’m afraid you’re a fairy forever.”
Niki’s heart sank. “Can’t I just use my magic to change myself back?”
“You can take human form, but even we aren’t strong enough to maintain spells for a whole lifetime. The sooner you accept your new life, the better off you’ll be. I’ll even apprentice you in the ways of fairy magic.”
Niki said nothing. She just sat there thinking about everything that happened to her. Finally she looked up. “Have you considered my offer, Nick?”
“It’s Niki now; Niki Nimblewings. That is the name of your new apprentice.”
