Kyle quickly switched on his turn signal and drove into his school's parking lot. Surprisingly, he found a spot with little trouble, one that wasn't even a long walk. But his luck ran out. Just as took his first step onto the pavement, he was ambushed by none other than his childhood friend, Dave. The same Dave who influenced Kyle in buying the eagle chains in the first place. It was the same Dave who's birthday happened to be today. "Crap!" Kyle cursed under his breathe.
The two of them stood there staring at each other in an awkward silence. Dave was the first to break the silence. "Hey Kyle" Dave kept his hands in his pockets and didn't say anything else.
"Hey Dave... Happy Birthday" Kyle tried to say with a little enthusiasm.
Dave shot him a quick smile. "So you remembered. Honestly, I wasn't sure if you would."
"You'd think I would forget my best... buds birthday." Kyle gave a little smile back. A hopeful idea popped into his head. "I have a present for you, but its not here with me. I kind of left it at home."
"Oh, you didn't have to get me anything."
"No, you remembered my birthday, so I wanted to get you something too..." Kyle glanced down at his shoes for a moment, as if they suddenly interested him. "Look, I know we've been avoiding each other, but I really would like to patch things up. I miss having my best friend."
"I don't know Kyle." Dave opened his mouth a couple more times, as if trying to say something else but couldn't form the words.
"Can you just come over to my place after school? I at least want to give you your present."
Dave nodded his head. "Okay, I'll see you at 5:00" With that, Dave walked off into the school yard.
Kyle let out a huge sigh and walked off in the opposite direction.
