After around nine minutes, the bathroom door opens and Kendra quickly hides behind her illusory self. The girl lightly knocks on the stall door and says, “Kendra, you in there?” It was Millie, Kendra’s best friend since Kindergarten and a fellow student in her English Lit class.
Kendra placed her hand over her throat and magically altered her voice before replying, “Yeah, it’s me.”
“The teacher wanted me to check on you. How’s it going in there?”
“Oh, uh, just fine Millie. It won’t be much longer.” Kendra remained behind her doppelganger, her wings folded and leaning on the cold pipe behind her, waiting for Millie to leave or enter a stall. As much as Kendra wanted to tell Millie that she was a fairy, there was no way for her to know how she’d react.
Now, Millie was quite the prankster and, from time to time, she would pull tricks on Kendra. Oh, Kendra would get her back just as often, too having a mischievous side of her own; but for now, Millie knew that the latch on Kendra’s stall was quite loose and wouldn’t take much to get it to open. She pushed hard on the stall door with her hand, forced it open and screamed like a banshee.
The sudden shock caused Kendra to lose control of her spells. She let out a fairy-pitched shriek and her wings flared out just as her illusion dissipated. What remained for Millie to see was a terrified nine-inch tall Kendra with pointed ears, antennae and sparkling wings. Kendra had the worst feeling of dread she’d ever felt as she awaited Millie’s reaction.
“Kendra?” Millie enters the stall and closes the door. “Is that… you?”
Kendra re-applied the voice-altering spell and said, “Yes, I’m a fairy.” She hung her head. “I’m sorry I never told you. I just couldn’t know how you’d react.”
“Well, I’d be lying if I said it’d be easy to tell someone you’re something that’s supposed to be a myth;” Millie said, “but still, all this time we’ve been friends and you couldn’t figure something out?”
Kendra crossed her arms. “Hey, it’s not like I’ve ALWAYS been a fairy. This whole thing only started a few months ago. On my birthday to be precise.”
“Oh, sorry.” Millie said. Suddenly, Kendra’s cell phone alarm went off. “What’s that for?” Millie asked.
“I have to remain in fairy form for ten minutes every day or else I’m forced into it. I don’t know why that is, but I can change back now.”
“That explains why you’d choose now of all times to let your inner Tinker Bell out.” Millie said, giggling.
“Very funny.” Kendra said sarcastically. “Now, if you don’t mind, I’d like to change back and I have to undress first.”
“Okay.” Millie said as she exited the bathroom stall. Kendra took off her dress and began to grow. Her wings and antennae slowly retreated into her body. Her ears rounded back out and she soon was back to human size and proportions. Kendra was relieved that Millie showed no sign of having a problem with her being a fairy. If anything her face showed that she seemed almost envious.
Outside the stall, as Kendra was changing back, Millie said, “I think we should meet at your house after school; there’s something I’d like to discuss, but it has to be in private.”
Kendra’s parents got home later than she did and they’d have almost two hours to discuss what they had to. As Kendra exited the stall, back in her normal clothes and human form, she responded, “Sure, we can do that.” And the two finished up the school day.
At Kendra’s house, she and Millie were sitting in her room. “So Millie, what did you want to discuss?”
Millie was apprehensive, but she finally got up the courage to speak. “Kendra, can you… can you make me a fairy, too?”
