"But mom! You saw what I could do with it!"
"Which is exactly why you can't use it unless me, your father, or Josie are with you. I'm sorry Ruth, but I
don't want to wake up tomorrow to a burning home."
"But I doused the fire out right away! You saw it! My wand can do almost anything!"
"...except enhance your maturity. Unless there's a spell for that. Is there a spell for that?"
Ruthie thought about it for a minute. Upon reflection, she couldn't think of one that increased wisdom or
maturity despite her encyclopedic knowledge of spells relating to the books. Bowing her head, she said
"...no."
"That's what I thought. Don't worry Ruthie. You can use it tomorrow. I promise. Think of it like driving a
car. I'll be your instructor. I'll help ease you into doing magic and being a witch even though I'm not one
myself. But I do know my daughter, and I can help you. I'll teach you how to do this right, and without
hurting anyone."
With a modicum of resentment in her voice, Ruthie said "OK, mom. I promise I'll be good and I promise not to
take it from you when you're sleeping."
"Thanks, Ruth." Mother and daughter then hugged, and went about their various business. As Ruthie went
upstairs to do whatever, she thought about her new sister and why she didn't tell mom about Josie's magic
ring. Logically, it would appear that a ring that could alter reality so easily would be one of the biggest
things on her mind, but somehow she didn't feel emotionally invested in it at all. Why? Did Josie MAKE her
uninterested? She went to Josie's room to find out...
