Stretching out the Ol' Wings

added 11 years ago BM S O

Not many know this, but supernatural beings make up just shy of 1% of the mostly human population of earth. Like the aliens in “Men In Black”, they disguise themselves as humans, if through magical means in this case, and consist of political refugees, exiled individuals or people who just want to make a decent living. Despite most humans’ refusal to believe such claims, most choose not to divulge or expose their true nature and; thus even fellow supernatural beings may be unaware of another’s true nature. Many are mythological beings like vampires, mermaids, werewolves, and, like Lilia, fairies.

Lila reached her penthouse apartment after a tiring day at the office and twisted the doorknob, confirming it was still locked. After unlocking the door, entering and relocking it, she set her briefcase and laptop down on the coffee table and stroked the pink jewel on the butterfly shaped pin on the right side of her chest; the key to her maintaining her human form without tiring herself maintaining the spell with her own magic. The jewel on the pin started to glow.

The young woman began to shrink; her high-heeled shoes becoming green leafy slippers; her pantyhose became pink, silken, skin-tight leggings; her pleated skirt flared into yellow flower petals, her jacket and blouse merged into a backless dress top made out of a green leaf, still bearing the pink jeweled butterfly pin.

At the same time, her shoulder-length brunette hair turned a deep pink color, her ears grew long and pointed, her eyes grew wider and antennae sprang from behind her bangs. The final step was the one she enjoyed the most. From her back grew two pairs of wings; broad like a butterfly’s, but appearing as thin crystal sheets.

As she finished her transformation, she was less than a foot tall, average fairy size. “Ahh, that feels much better!” She said as she fluttered her wings and floated up into the air. She flew around her living room stopping only to do a brief spin in the air.

When she looked toward the hall, she gasped and froze; her face taking on the same shocked look as the person standing at the end of the hall. A person she’s known for years.
