Zack called one of his friends whom he thought would be available. Dawn went to a local college, but didn't have any classes that day. She answered her phone, sounding pleased that he called.
"What's up?" she asked.
"Nothing at all. Are you interested in meeting up? We could grab a bite, or just go around town for a bit."
"That sounds great. How about I meet you at the bookstore in forty-five minutes? There's a few things I want to look for, and then we can go from there."
"Cool. See you then, Dawn."
Zack got himself ready to go, starting with transforming himself back to his original form. The remote had conveniently stored his body when he had scanned himself, so undoing any changes would be a snap. Also curious about transforming himself and Dawn in public, he looked at the buttons and noticed there seemed to be a setting to make themselves or others either unaware of their changes, or accepting of them. That would definitely come in handy, unless they wanted to be carted off to the local zoo.
He finished getting dressed and headed out to the bookstore. It was located in a busy part of town, so they could easily walk to a number of places. This, too, seemed like a good idea, because Zack was unsure if he should try driving a car while transformed...especially if he ever got his hooves back.
He walked into the bookstore a few minutes early. Dawn didn't seem to be there yet. He looked for an out of the way spot in some lonely aisles, where he whipped out the remote to give it another once-over. He started thinking of how he would show it off to Dawn. Should he surprise her with it? Transform himself in front of her? Or just show her the remote but take her somewhere more private before they made any changes?
A few minutes later, he walked back to the front of the store to anticipate her arrival. Dawn showed up soon afterward. She wore a short-sleeve blouse and jeans. Her wavy black hair was loose and fell just past her shoulders. She was 21, like Zack. She was four inches shorter than him, but where he had the height advantage, she had the intellectual. She was studying astronomy. Zack enjoyed hanging out with her for her high-spirited attitude and passion for the unknown. He knew she would get a kick out of the remote one way or another.
"Hey there," she greeted him. "How have you been?"
"Pretty good. How are classes?"
They exchanged some idle conversation as Dawn perused the aisles, looking for a few books she had in mind to read. Zach's hand kept reaching down to the remote in his pocket as he thought of how to introduce it to Dawn.
