A Game of Change

Toxic Relationships

added by Sylvan 20 years ago O

Tyler looked at the table and tried not to think about death.

The demon's revelation shook him to his core and -now- he felt even weaker and more insignificant than his diminished, four-foot-height made him. He'd spoken it so matter-of-factly ... so casually.

"Would you like to know what I see?"

The tiny man shuddered. Know how he would die. Would anyone? And was Sid right? Could it be avoided. The two spaces going to either the outer ring of the board's spaces or the inner ring, beckoned to him. The choice had to be made.

Putting aside his doubts, Tyler stood up on his chair and reached across the board to touch his miniature pawn. Picking it up, he counted out his full move along the outer track and passed the Incubus' piece. Two spaces beyond, he paused.

Another intersection.

This divergence in the path could actually take him to a slightly shorter route than the outer ring but wasn't quite as heavily laden with "CHANGE" spaces as the innermost route. In fact, as he did the math, he'd probably be safest going on either the 2nd or 3rd routes rather than the innermost or outermost.

"I guess I can choose my destiny after all," he said, trying to capture some sense of control over his life, again, and took his last couple jumps up the intersection towards the 2nd circle around the board.

He stopped. A Blue, SOCIAL square.

All eyes turned to the center of the board as the misty letters, there, flowed, shifted and changed, uttering their pronouncement upon the player.

TEMPORARY CHANGE
-3 turns-

"Empathy you've seldom had nor through other eyes, you've seen.
A stoic man -tried and true- your relations have been a dream.
But this all ends as now, you know, your partner is your fate,
Feel, then, the twisted touch of a love that also, you hate.
"What th'...?"

Tyler looked at the others around the table, slowly. The Incubus was still staring at him, intently; those solid, glowing lavender eyes seeing God-knew-what as they stared at the shrunken man's face. Sid, looking oddly uninterested now, despite his massive physique, sat across from him, watching intently. And Chris...

Chris.

His one, true love. His boyfriend. His lover. The man whose fame and wealth Tyler resented and hated most of all people he'd ever met. He felt his heart race faster as he looked at the lapine man and felt the contrast of conflicting emotions burning within his heart.

Chris tugged idly at his seashell necklace and gazed back, non-comprehending.

Sid looked between the two of them and then back at the board as the words faded. A look of realization dawned on him and he shot a glance towards Tyler.

The conflicted look on his friend's face would have been apparent to a blind man.

"Oh, no... Tyler."

Tyler looked at Sid and nodded. "I'm afraid so..." he said, regretting his words already.

"Afraid so? What's happened?"

"Chris, love..." started the small man, struggling with his feelings. How to say it? He hated the big, stupid rabbit. His fame wasn't earned and his fortune stagnant while millions went hungry throughout the world. Chris' sin was that of the idle rich but...

"He loves you, bunny-boy," muttered Sid, sounding sickened by the prospect. "He loves you and hates you, just like the game said..."

Chris looked stunned.

"Look, I know you're fragile, but ... but you've gotta know that I just can't ... oh God..." Tyler trailed off. How could he put his voice to these sudden, overwhelming feelings? He looked at the others as if for help but only found himself faced with Sid's scowl and those eerie, piercing eyes of the Incubus. He looked back to Chris.

His lover was idly rich, that was true, but he was also kind. He was ... sweet. Sensitive. He was also good-looking...

Well, for a rabbit.

"Chris, hon, I ... I don't exactly hate you," he lied. "But ... but I get so conflicted about things. Your wealth ... your fame... Those are such barriers..."

Chris looked like he was almost ready to cry as the full torment the game had visited upon his friend dawned on him. "Tyler, please... Don't..."

"Can't you see this is tearing me up inside?!!" shouted the tiny man, nearly jumping out of his chair as he stood on the seat. "You, of all people! Why ... why did I have to fall in love with you?!!"

"...that's what I'd like to know," muttered Sid under his breath.

Chris bit his lower lip and looked at his friends. The game was killing them by inches but what choice did they have but to play?

"Look, Ty," he said, quietly. "The game's fucked with how you feel for me twice now; you know that... But ... but I'll get you out of this. I'll play through if it kills me... Later, we can talk about this... Just hang on..."

Sid snorted as Chris picked up the dice. "God, you sound like a Hallmark card..." he muttered.

The rabbit ignored the lion and rolled the dice.
