"Mom, did you see that, a lady went into that changing woman and came out a little girl." a young boy with black hair said to his mother who didn't seem to take her eyes off her phone for one minute to look.
"Don't make up silly stories Floyd, just get into the changing room and change into your swim trunks." The boy's mother instructed still not looking up from her phone.
"My name's Frederick mom not Floyd." Frederick said with a little annoyance.
"Of course it is, just get changed." That was the last sentence he heard his mother say before he closed the changing room door behind him.
Frederick as he liked to be called was given his name not by his mother but rather by the nurse who had suggested it to her. Frederick's mother, Celine, was a woman who only gave birth to her son when she was sixteen. The father had been a woman who Celine only met once but never saw again after their one night together. Once she got pregnant, she left her old life behind and was started a new life that became even more boring than she imagined. She had usually hired a baby sitter to watch Frederick as he was growing up while she went to have her own fun with friends, though she would usually dread when she had to come home for the babysitter to leave.
Frederick himself was ten years old and didn't mind all that much that his mother wasn't home a lot. Like a many people who had told him time and time again, he found his mother to be quite a beautiful woman.
'She hasn't been completely happy with me. I just wish I could be the man she wanted me to be.' Frederick thought to himself. He then grabbed the doorknob and got a slight shock. He touched the knob again, though this time he got it open without any shock.
Celine glanced up from her phone expecting to see a little boy emerge but had to direct her eyes further up when she instead met a man who looked about thirty years old with black flattop hair and a nice set of muscles.
"Oh, well hello there big man." Celine said looking directly at his eyes.
"Uh, hi." Frederick answered seeming a little bit confused.
He then looked himself over and saw that he wasn't only older but he had gotten muscles.
"Do I look different to you?" Frederick asked his mother who had no idea that this man was her son.
"You look absolutely perfect to me." Celine replied.
"Well if you say so, can we go get some smoothies?"
"Smoothies? No."
"Oh, okay." Frederick said sadly.
"I meant we can get one and share it." Celine giggled.
"Oh yeah, that's cool, let's go."
"Do you mind if I hold onto your arm while we walk there?"
"No, not at all."
"So do you have a name?"
"It's Frederick, you should remember that."
"Frederick, the name sounds familiar, but if it's your name, I'll remember it forever." Celine said kissing him on the cheek.
"Gee well thanks, I forgot to ask, what's your name?" Frederick as they walked.
"It's Celine, as in Celine: your new girlfriend." Celine said as she leaned against him as they walked.
Frederick was shocked that his mother not only didn't recognize him as a grown man but was now his own girlfriend. He was going to say something, but he realized that this was the only way his mother would ever look at him with loving eyes.
"Come here." Frederick whispered to Celine as he leaned her back and kissed her on the lips. When both of them stopped they looked at each other with a delighted face.
"Now let's go get that smoothie." Frederick said as they continued on their way.
Frederick never said anything about him growing older and eventually forgot he were originally mother and son. Even if he did, this way was better for both of them.
