Kary, a survivor in Kansas

added 10 years ago A I O

Before the war, Kary was an ordinary school girl in southern Kansas, USA. For most of the war, her home town
was safe from harm of the Alien Invasion. However it was just after high school graduation, a few weeks after
turning 18 years old, that Directive Armageddon was initiated. In the event of this occurring, strong
military-grade bunkers. In those bunkers there was enough food to last an entire city’s worth of people
several years, and since there is limited oxygen there were several cryo-tubes that would keep the people
alive for as long as it takes. However when Directive Armageddon was initiated, the Aliens broke through
Earth’s defenses, and attacked Kary’s home town. Amidst the chaos, Kary’s parents were among the first to be
the killed. Kary was saddened and frightened by the loss of her family, but she knew that her parents wanted
her to survive, so she ran as fast as she could to the military bunker, and made it inside just as the heavy
doors closed shut behind her. She was surprised, unfortunately, to see that no one else was here, meaning she
was the only one who made it inside.

With nothing to do as the world she knew burned to the ground, she had no choice but to settle in. she quickly
put on the appropriate suit for the cryo-tube, and stepped in. as the tube filled up with cold water a series
of plugs meant for waste disposal were inserted into her lower area. And as the water filled up to her head, a
breathing mask covered her whole face, providing limited oxygen to keep her alive, and occasional nutrients
to feed her. And as the chamber was filled completely, the water froze solid, and Kary drifted off to sleep;
her body preserved for years to come.

Several years after Directive Armageddon, there was a drastic malfunction in the systems of the bunker. The
computers quickly ran diagnostics, and came to the conclusion to deactivate cryogenics systems. As the ice in
Kary’s tube melted, she started to wake up. Within minutes the cryo-tube was emptied, and opened. Kary fell
out of the tube, her plugs and mask fell off as she did, and she regained conscious.

“What happened,” Kary said wearily, “Did someone find me?”

“Negative,” the bunker’s computer said in a computerized voice. “there was a major malfunction in the
cryogenics systems. This system was forced to shut down and release 1 of 1 residents to maintain primary
functions.”

“Well that sucks,” Kary commented. “How long was I asleep?”

“It has been 7 years since the cryogenic functions have been engaged,” the computer said.

Kary took all of this news in hard, she couldn’t believe that it was seven years since she lost everything,
and she didn’t have much time to cope. “What’s going on at the surface?” she asked.

“The current status of the surface above this bunker is this:” the computer elaborated. “It is possible for
human life to travel onto the surface, however it is not recommended. The surface is currently comprised of
100% desert/wasteland for an unknown amount of miles. It is currently impossible for human life to settle said
conditions. There are also some signs of inhuman signs of life: possibly the effects of alien bio-weapons left
behind from the war. Use of firearms is reccomended while outside facility.”

Kary thought about her options, she could stay in the bunker for a while, see what there is down here, or she
could see what she can do about the cryo-systems, or she could take her chances and explore the desert
outside.
