It was her 17-year old daughter Laura. She had a shocked look on her face; as one would expect from not only seeing a fairy fluttering right before her eyes, but also realizing that it looked exactly like her mother. “M-Mom!” she shouted with a quiver in her voice before backing up against the wall. Her legs gave out beneath her and she fell on her seat.
Jane flew to Laura’s cheek and placed her hand on her daughter’s cheek. As with Molly, the magic of her touch calmed her down, but Laura was still stunned and rattled. “Yes honey, it’s me, your mother.” Jane said.
“Since when are you a… fairy?” Laura asked.
“I’ve been a fairy my whole life; born in a world of magical beings that humans cannot reach on their own. I came here 21 years ago because I was fascinated by humans and wanted to live among them. Though I did not expect to fall in love and have children with one.”
“Dad; does he know?”
“Yes, I told him just after he proposed. Cassie and Leo don’t know, and Molly’s just a baby, so she won’t remember me like this. None of you did when I used to use my fairy form and magic to calm you down as infants.”
“So, wait, does this mean we’re all half fairies?”
“Your sisters are, but Leo isn’t because only girls can inherit fairy blood. I’m sorry for having waited so long to tell you, since puberty is such a turbulent time already, even for fairies; but I suppose it’s best you found out now, considering what’s soon to happen.”
“What’s that?”
“Well, full-blooded fairies are born with some rudimentary magic. As they approach their 18th birthday, the full range of their magic is unsealed. For half fairies, like you, this means fairy magic will manifest within you… as will your fairy form.”
“Fairy form? I’m going to… shrink and… sprout wings?”
“Yes, and I’m sure you’ll be as beautiful a fairy as you are a human.” Jane said as she landed and ceased the flutter of her wings.
Laura looked at her mother’s wings. They did look beautiful, but thinking about something like them suddenly sprouting from her back at any time. “This is so much to take in, just… just give me a moment.” Laura said.
“Take all the time you need, sweetie.” Her mother said before her body started to grow. Her wings retreated into her back, antennae into her forehead and her other fairy features returning to human proportions. “Just remember, I’m here for you whenever you need me.”
Laura took several moments to process this sudden rush of new information.
