Cody’s eyes scanned the lavender tail that was once my legs. “That’s… not… a costume.” He said finally.
“No, it’s not.” I said.
“How long have you been like this?”
“Since this morning, I suppose.”
“What do you mean ‘you suppose’?” Cody asked.
“Well, it’s a long story.” I explained the story of my encounter with Serenity, our kiss and my transformation, starting in the shower and ending when I dove into the ocean.
“So a mermaid kisses a human, and becomes a mermaid?” Cody asked.
“That’s my working theory, at least.” I answered. “It’s just one of the questions I hope Serenity can answer.” I looked out to the sea and whispered to myself. “Where are you Serenity, I need you.”
“You don’t suppose it could work on me, do you?” Cody asked.
My head snapped back to him. “Wait, what!? You want to be a mermaid, too?”
“Yes, more than anything!”
“You DID catch the part where she told me her kind are only girls, right?”
