Amber awakes and opens her eyes looking about herself, nose lifting to smell the air as she sits up. What caused her to awake she wonders giving a soft whine of puzzlement then yips in surprise as she feels something inside herself move.
“Keula!” The suddenly panicking malamute bitch howls.
“What is it my bitch?” The alpha dog Keula calls from across the yard before racing over to the dog pen. A group of young malamute perks ears forward in sudden interest, listening and watching their lead dog while trying to not be jealous at his being lose while they sit chained to a post awaiting human handlers.
“My stomach…I think something I ate is still alive!”
Nosing and sniffing his mate threw the chain fencing the big male malamute tries to not openly laugh at the unexpericed mother. “Silly Amber.” He tries to give her nose a bit of a calming lick. “Do you not remember our talk as we watched the moon rise? You know just before we lead the pack howl?”
“Moon rise? Pack howl?” Amber does not remember any of this but she does love howling that thought is very clear to her at least. Licking her own nose she presses her bulk against the fence. “I want you back in the pen with me.” She whimpers not able to control her instinctive need to be close to the pack leader.
“The musher is busy finishing the new fencing but will come to move you soon so you will be with your pack. You would be out here with us only he thinks you’re going to whelp soon.” Sniffing at the bitch Keula smiles and wags his tail. “I agree with him as you smell ready to me. The pack bitches think you’re going to be dropping puppies soon as well.” Very pleased with himself at having brought the once human Amber into the pack the big male can not hold his excitement as he wonders how big the litter will be. Looking at his fattened mate and her hanging teats he lets his tongue loll out the side of his muzzle. The other near by dogs catching the mood of the lead dog also wag tail as they too are pleased with the pack growing bigger.
“We are moving?” Really confused now the bitch looks her mate in the eyes. “We are being sold to a buyer?” Her scent turning to fear musk even as her body shivers slightly.
“No my mate. Think back to our last pack howl. Remember thinking up names of our puppies? You said something about liking the name Matt. Then we mock battled as I teasingly called you human for picking weird names for our puppies?”
Amber thinks hard her thoughts so strange to her even as she decides it must be caused by carrying a litter of puppies. Yes a voice in her head tells her as it’s her first time so it’s bound to be confusing. Getting mad at being called human does sound like her she decides. As if any dog but her mate so dared call her one of the two legs they would lose an ear! “I still like the name Matt.” She tells her mate while moving back from the fence playfully so he can not reach for a play nip at her teasing him. “How come our musher is moving us to a new dog yard all ready?” Memories of the human putting the pack in different locations on the dog pack lands come to her even as she wonders why she did not remember this before. As of course the humans do not want us dogs getting sick from bedding down in the same place too long she tells herself.
“Not sure. But I think it was because of Becky.”
Amber growls softly at the name of the husky bitch who dares act like the female alpha. “What’s that bitch got to do with what our musher does?”
Keula cocks an ear to the east then turns his head to peer off into the distance. “Here they come up the path. Now be a good bitch case our master has another human with him.” Hoping his mate reacts well to a human Becky he decides to keep an even closer eye on his chosen bitch. Smelling a male dog and two humans he sits close to the pen holding his mate and waits as his tail begins a wag instinctively at scent of the human alpha.
