Suddenly a brilliant flash of color explodes before your eyes, it is the prettiest largest butterfly you've ever seen. It flits from bush to bush tantalizingly close to you. You follow it away from the pass toward a stand of trees, as you approach, you can see that there appears to be a clearing beyond the trees,and you hear running water. The butterfly lights for a moment on your hand then flutters through the trees toward the clearing. It's like it's asking you to follow. You do.
The clearing is beautiful, and you stare at the pristine small waterfall flowing into the pond. Fern fronds, and colorful flowers grow from the banks of the pond. Birds sing, a bunny hops by, and the butterfly has lighted on a branch of a bush right next to the bond. It's wings seem to glitter in the sunlight, you approach for a better look. It spreads its wings but remains on the branch as if posing. You step closer, but stumble in a concealed rabbit hole. You fall head first into the pond.
The water is cold, yet stimulating, you burst out of the water gasping for air. In spite of your splashing, the butterfly sits unperturbed on the branch. Your skin is tingling, almost burning. There must be something in the water. From your new perspective you can see looking up the shallow waterfall that in fact it's a drainage outlet for an industrial plant which is shielded from view by the trees. Water gets in your eyes, it stings like gasoline, but smells like lilacs. You squint, standing knee deep in the water, you start to feel warm and weak kneed. Your throat burns, you must have swallowed some of this polluted water too. But everything is so vibrant and vital, the stuff can't be poison. Can it? You start to fall toward the bank of the pond.
