“Then I’m coming, too.” Emily said suddenly.
“What? No way; out of the question!” Melissa protested.
“Please, Melissa; ever since this whole thing started, I’ve felt helpless, useless. I just want to help you and Stef get back to normal.”
“Right,” Stefanie said sarcastically, “you just don’t trust me, do you.”
Emily let out a heavy sigh. “This isn’t about you! That said; your actions today don’t exactly inspire confidence that you’ll stay focused on finding a cure.” Emily turned back to Melissa. “Besides, strength in numbers, if mermaids are real who knows what else is down there. There could be things that make Jaws look like Flounder.”
“What if we don’t find a cure,” Melissa said, “or there’s only one or two left, or even if Serenity used the last one? What then?”
“Then I can think of no one better to spend a long mermaid life with than you.”
Melissa could tell Emily was being sincere, and as she looked into her eyes, the urge to kiss her was stronger than ever.
