A Game of Change

Taking a break pizza and change beak

added 9 years ago O

Greg entered the old strange store and looked around. The store mostly empty except for a few shelves filled with dusty looking books, several stack of boxes scattered along the walls and a worn wooden counter with a brass cash register and a wrinkled old man that looked positively ancient.

"Umm hey I'm looking for a fun party game to play with some friends." said Josh, an college student with an average build. "And no where else seems to be open or selling anything good, so you do have any games?"

A glint seemed to appear in the Old Man's eye and he pulled a long thin box from under the counter in one smooth motion. "This one's good. I've sold it more times than I can count and every person who has bought it has always had a, unforgettable experience."

"You mean sold copies of it right? I mean how can you sell one game multiple times?" asked Josh coming closer to the counter to get a look at the game box. A Game of Change read the title in faded gold writing while the res of the box was blank giving no indication of what kind of game it was.

"Of course, how foolish of me. But I still by what I said and you can have it write now for $5," apologised the Old Man. "So what do you say?"

"I guess if it's fairly popular and people have told you they liked it." answered Josh, amazed at how cheap the Old Man was willing to sell a board game when most stores asked for at least double the price. And he didn't really have time to go anywhere else as he checked his phone and pulled out his wallet. He took out the bill and handed it to the man.

"I am sure you'll get at least some enjoyment from it." said the Old Man accepting the bill and pushing the game towards Josh.

Josh took the game and left the store, making sure to pick up the pizza his friends had originally sent him out to get before heading back to the house two of his friends were renting for the semester.

Back in the store, the Old Man turned on the SRU-TV and rubbed his hands in anticipation of the entertainment to come.

Josh arrived at the house a half an hour later with the pizza and game in hand. "Hey look what I got!"

"Alright the food's finally here." said Pat, a tall athletic guy who was one of the renters, from the living room.

"Hey what's that other thing you have?" asked Monica, a slim shorter girl, as she turned to look down the hall.

"A board game so we can do something beside looking for something good on TV." replied Josh setting the pizza down in the kitchen and walking into the living room where everyone was.

"What kind of game is it? The box is blank and it looks like something you'd see on Trash Raiders." commented Max a guy with a hefty but muscular build.

"Don't worry I the guy who sold it to me promised he has sold a ton of copies of it." said Josh confidently as he set it on the coffee table and opened the box.

"Yeah and what if he was lying to you just to make sale and it really sucks, hmmm?" asked Julia, an average height girl with long hair.

"Then we can use it for a drinking game duh!" cut in Ashley, a girl of average height and a slim body.

"Cool let's play then." said Josh as he set up the game. Unfolding the board to reveal a long multi colored twisting path from one corner of the board to the other. Several stacks of cards matching the colors on the board. Six human shaped game pieces. A yellowed instruction booklet and a single grey die with silver dots.

"Okay according to this," said Ashley grabbing the instructions. "We roll to see who goes first and go clockwise from whoever rolls the highest. The object of the game is to reach the end first and whoever does gets a wish. But changes to gameplay can happen depending on the color of the space you land on. For example red cause physical transformation, blue mental, yellow animal but grey does nothing."

"How would something transform in a board game? And how would mental transformations work?" asked Monica looking confused.

"I dunno the booklet doesn't say anything else." frowned Ashley also looking confused as she looked through the booklet.

"Ah whatever let's just start already." said Max and grabbed the die.
