As the minutes ticked away, Kyle drifted off to sleep. His breathing became soft and rhythmic. His hand dropped from the half of the two-headed eagle to his side. Soon afterwards, his dog, Lacey, walked into his room. She was a sweet and very bright german shepherd and golden retriever mix. Her curled tail wagged slightly when she spotted her owner.
Lacey nudged Kyle's feet, which were hanging from the bed, but he made no movement in response. Discouraged, she turned around and headed for the door, only for her still wagging tail to knock the wooden box off Kyle's desk. WIth a thunk, the box landed on the floor spilling its contents. Kyle did not move a muscle.
Lacey dropped her head down and curiously sniffed the left half of the two-headed eagle chain. Lacey picked up the interesting object with her mouth and quickly walked out of her owner's room.
Lacey bounded down the stairs just as Josh, Kyle's elder brother, opened the door. She quickly took her chance to get outside and ran through the open door before Josh could react. She sprinted down the driveway and then down the street. Josh angrily called her name as he ran after her. She only made it a short distance before Josh grabbed her by the collar. Lacey had stopped to smell a bush that another neighborhood dog had made its mark on.
While Lacey was being pulled away, she accidentally lost the chain she was carrying in her mouth, and Josh did not noticed the metallic half eagle necklace on the sidewalk.
