Kyle did not get a chance to nap for long. Only a few minutes had passed since he had laid down when the door bell rang. "Uugghh..." Kyle groaned. He rubbed his eyes gently before walking down stairs to answer the door.
"Dave?" Kyle asked surprised. "What are you doing here?" A cold breeze rolled in from the outside, making Kyle shiver. "Come on in." Kyle offered, motioning with his free hand.
Dave did just that. He stepped in and kicked off his shoes, like Kyle had done earlier, while Kyle closed the door. "I just wanted to stop by and hang out..." Dave brushed a strand for curly red hair from his face, obviously anxious. "We haven't hung out in... a long while. I miss hanging out with you dude."
Kyle smiled inwardly, glad that his friend wanted to improve their friendship. They both had been so busy lately, they did not make the time to hang out. For the past couple of months, they had barely talked in or out of school. Kyle was busy in track, and Dave was busy with his girlfriend. "I'm glad you came over. I...uh... I actually have something for you." Dave looked at him curiously. "I was going to save it for your birthday on Sunday, but since you're here.... Come up to my room with me, and I'll just show you." Kyle grinned as he walked up the stairs to his room with Dave at his heel.
Kyle grabbed the carved wooden box from his desk and handed it to Dave. "Sorry I didn't wrap it yet."
"No problem dude." Dave was grinning. "I wasn't sure if you would remember my birthday." Dave then pried open the box, and was pleasantly surprised to see the necklace. "Oh wow." Dave pulled out the eagle chain and placed the box back on the desk. He threw the chain over his neck and peered closely at the the half-eagle.
"Its half of one set." Kyle explained, showing the other half was around his neck. "Its supposed to make two people the closest of friends, according to the guy I got this from."
"This is really cool. Thanks Kyle." Dave had a thing for old trinkets. "It looks like the two necklaces are half-eagles. Do they fit together?"
"I think so. The guy wouldn't let me put them together earlier, said that we should be the ones to since I was getting it for you." Kyle answered. "Let's see what they look like." The two teens brought their individual halves together; the two pieces fit perfectly, making the two-headed eagle whole.
Suddenly, several sparks flew from the two pieces. "WOW!" Both boys exclaimed at the same time, each dropping the half they were holding. However, the two pieces did not separate when they had let them go. The two pieces remained together and hung in the space between Kyle and Dave. Looking closely, the pieces were not separate anymore. They were one, as if they had were welded together.
Before either teen could speak another word, the single two-headed eagle began to glow with a faint purple light. That light slowly moved through the chains that were still around the boys' necks. Kyle and Dave stared back and forth from each other to the two-headed eagle. A bright flash of light emanating from the the necklaces blinded both of them. The light felt powerful. Both Kyle and Dave could feel an energy flow into their bodies.
And just as suddenly as it started, it ended. The light suddenly vanished, leaving both teens with black spots in their vision. "Uugghh" Dave rubbed his eyes, trying to get the blind spots out of his eyes. He felt very disoriented and unbalanced. "What was that?"
"I don't know." Kyle was also messaging his eyes, but Dave's voice was oddly close, like Dave was talking directly into his left ear. He instinctively took a step to the side, but quickly lost balance and stubbled backwards. Thankfully, his bed was behind him, so he had a soft landing. He laid on his back, blinking his eyes. Kyle's vision was starting to clear.
Dave noticed that Kyle's voice felt directly beside him, on his right. He didn't worry about that now though. He continued to lay down on Kyle's bed, somehow having lost his balance and falling backwards. Dave blinked a couple times, his vision coming back. He scratched an itch on his forehead before bringing his hand down to rest on his chest. It was odd to Dave though. He could feel his palm resting on one side of his chest, but he could not feel the touch of his fingers on other other side. It was like half of him was numb.
Kyle felt a fingers, not his own, touch his chest. He slapped them away. "Dude, what are you doing?" Kyle tried to sit up, but felt an unusual weight to his left that was holding him down. He realized then, that he couldn't feel his left hand, or his left leg, or any other part of his body that was on the left. He quickly shot himself up into a sitting position. This time, there was less resistance on his left. Looking down, he saw his two legs and two arms and his body, but it was wrong somehow. His left sock was now white and grey instead of being pure black like his right. The left pants leg of his jeans was a deeper shade of blue. His white shirt looked like it had been stitched together to a dark red shirt.
Dave was processing the same thing as he looked down at his body and its mismatched clothes. He defiantly wasn't wearing all of this 5 seconds ago. Slowly, he turned his head to the right, just as Kyle turned his head to the left. They stared into each other's shocked eyes. They didn't know how, but the two-headed eagle chain turned them into a two-headed boy.
