You walked far into the wilderness, so engaged in the scenery that you didn't pay attention to the distance you traveled. By the time you realized that you had better turn around, it was almost sunset. You looked up into the evening sky, trying to get your bearings by the direction of the sun, when a streak of incandescent green light appeared above you. You stared at for a moment, fixated by its beauty, until you realized it was headed straight for you. Quickly dodging behind a tree, you hear a loud whistle and thud as the meteorite crashes into the Earth where you stood just a moment ago. The impact kicks up buckets of dirt around you and leaves a rut in the ground several yards long.
Cautiously peeking from around the tree, you see an object about the size of a softball still glowing green in the crater. You thought this odd as any normal rock would have glowed red or even blue, but green was a new one. You figured it was probably some radioactive component from a space shuttle or something and debated on whether to call somebody. Then, of course, you realized there was no reception here because you had walked too far away from your home.
Curious, you decide to get a closer look. As you approach, you smell the familiar scent of wood burning, though the meteorite hadn't hit any trees. When you finally get close enough to peer into the hole, you are surprised by what you see. The object which had crashed into the ground was not any old rock or even space junk: it was a seed!
You take off your jacket and wave it over the seed, cooling it off a bit before picking it up with the jacket like a sling and toting it back to your house for examination. Trekking through the wilderness with the sun to your back, you think of how a seed could possibly have fallen from space. It was a very large seed and you didn't know many plants on Earth that had a seed that big. It looked rather like a peach pit, rock hard and covered in grooves. The only explanation you could come up with was that it was the seed off an extraterrestrial plant!
By the time you got home, it was nearly dark and you had to fumble for your keys on the porch. Once inside, you flicked on the lights in the kitchen and laid the jacket out on the table with the seed on top. It was fascinating, the shell was practically impenetrable having survived the entry into Earth's atmosphere completely intact. You tried hitting it off the table and saw that it scratched the granite veneer. You knew you had to call someone about this, but you didn't want to have to deal with a science frenzy all night. You would keep it safe until tomorrow morning, then you would have all day to sort things out. As for keeping it safe...there had been a bit of a problem with raccoons getting in through a loose window in the basement and raiding the kitchen. You knew they couldn't hurt the seed, but you didn't want them carrying it off to who knows where before it could be inspected. With no better place to keep it, you decided to put it on the bedside table next to you, where a curious raccoon would not be likely to go. You got ready for bed and went to sleep dreaming of how your discovery would make you famous.
Little did you know, the seed was going to make you something...and it wasn't a celebrity.
