You try to focus on the barbecue, but there are so many other new things to explore as a dog. You catch sight of a squirrel, and your body has an unbelievable urge to chase it. Giving in, you leap towards the little furry critter, but the unfamiliar action results in your four legs getting tangled up. While trotting was a motion somewhat similar to crawling as a human, you have no experiential reference for running on four paws. The squirrel scolding you from the branches of the tree above, you gather yourself up off the grass and stand, nothing bruised but your dignity.
While you are wary of ending up face-first in the grass again, you are excited by the amount of speed you were able to gather in just one leap. You want to run full-speed, so you spend some time harassing nearby squirrels and pigeons, slowly getting the hang of running about on four feet. Soon you are able to tear around the neighborhood at a flat-out run, sending all manner of small animals running in panic. You, however, are having the time of your life. You could get used to this.
While on your wild rampage, out of the corner of your eye comes a shocking sight. You spot a small child running towards the street after a stray ball, while the driver of an approaching car fails to spot him. Not thinking about anything except protecting the little boy, you use every bit of skill you learned this afternoon to race over on your four legs and yank him out of the way. While the child is safe, you lose momentum by moving the child, and the car catches you on the bumper as it screeches to a halt. You are thrown into the air a short distance and land hard on the pavement, where everything goes black.
Woozy, you open your eyes slightly a little bit later. It takes you a minute to remember why you are lying outside on the cold pavement, and you try to raise your head.
