Magical Route 66 - inflatable bears

added by Nobody 9 years ago A AR I

The family drove calmly and causally. They had no idea of the MAGICAL nature of route 66. For Lina, it was the HISTORY behind this route that got her attention, that it had been once a route taken by native americans and then turned into a modern road, carried with it several pieces of history. She knew the rumors about the road, but they were aliens, an inbred of killers hiding in the woods, people vanishing on some random road sounded too much like the Bermuda Triangle.

When the locals spoke of animal spirits, for her, this meant that it was just their version of a walk-about, to find their totem, Linda wasn't a teacher of that subject, and wished to learn more.

Henry Everson was focused on driving, just happy his wife was happy, and he could finally afford to spend time with his family now.

Debra was keeping herself busy with her smartphone, oblivious to the rest of the world.

As for Rick and Sam, since their parents had strictly forbidden them from pestering Debra, they were reduced to coming up with their own ideas about this route, well, Rick was, Sam mostly just agreed with his brother said, mostly cause he didn't care much for the game himself, (but his gameboy's batteries had died and they didn't own a car adaptor for the recharger).

It wouldn't have mattered if they had been aware of route 66 being magical or or not, for their perception changed as they changed, and never noticed anything happening to them.

Henry remained driving, but that was about the only thing that remained the same.

They skin began to turn smooth and shinny, darkening to brown, except for their hands, feet, faces, and bellies, and molding seams began to appear around their bodies. Their bodies became hallow, filled with nothing but air, but they continued to move just fine. As they moved, the sound of rubber against rubber became more audible.

Their faces stretched out into squarish muzzles with a large black nose, and their ears turned round and moved further up their heads. Their eyes still saw, but they looked almost painted on. Their hair receded into their heads, leaving them all balled.

Their bodies become rounder, bigger, their clothes vanished, but there was no longer anything underneath to hide. Their rears only had a small round tail, and between their legs was only smooth rubber.

Their feet and hands became paws, their only difference being their 'hands' still had opposable thumbs.

And reality changed. Or perhaps they were sent to a different reality and made to fit with their new context, either way, it didn't matter. Memories changed seamlessly and without notice.

As the changes finished, the five fell strangely silent, merely looking ahead as Henry drove the car, the rest just politely sitting and watching as he did so.

The vast majority of their luggage vanished, having never existed in the first place now.

When the car finally drove off Route 66, it stopped, parked, and the five hollow rubber bears got out, and calmly stood at attention.

Two men in equipment who had been waiting for them congratulated themselves. They took the camera out of the cart, which showed only inflatable bears driving, not humans, that would be silly, since these five had never been human.

"I told you Henry would be able to pull it off. Driving all the way from Chicago to here, no accidents, no traffic violations, no nothing, it's all gone perfectly," one man said to another.

"A lot better than I expected," the other man said. "I'd say this proves how complex Henry's gotten. Isn't that right Henry?"

"Yes professor," Henry replied calmly.

"Enjoy the 'family trip?'"

"Yes professor," the five rubber anthro bears said together.

"You know the rest still think we're strange for naming them rather than proto-types 1, 2, 3, 4A, and 4B."

"Hey, they wanted us to create semi-living long-term servants for the elderly and playmates for kids who could interact with people and carry out tasks in the real world. Names just work better. And Rick and Sam are a great way to see how two identical models might develop different idiosyncrasies."

"Preaching to the chorus brother."

The five inflated bears just stood waiting for what their testers wanted of them next. After all, it was what they had been made for. They only hoped they pleased them.
