Katie grinned to herself, as the girls started to giggle and gather sleeping bags and supplies that had appeared with the change. One or two started to braid their hair while others began to do nails. They started talking about boys, about going to junior high and about spin the bottle. Katie specificially focused on Kelly, who was acting like a perfectly happy, carefree preteen. Now Katie knew for certain, she liked this girl, this sister. This was the person she'd wanted all her life, not her stuffy, prim mother. She wanted to keep that, to have independence but not lose herself or anyone else.
"I wish that Kelly was my real sister, that we were real twins and that our mom passed away when we were small and left us a really good chunk of money so we would always be secure no matter what. I wish that because of a flaw in the system, that we were wards of the state but that our caretaker allowed our own independence and such so long as we were responsible. I wish all our belongings and this house and the reality around us reflected that..."
Katie felt the ring glow.
